Renda da Ilha

Bobbin lace is an Azorean tradition brought to Florianopolis – my hometown – during the colonisation period. Nowadays, new generations are losing this handmade technique.

This pattern honours all the few lacemakers from the magic island (how Florianopolis is known), using as a motif a piece of lace that I photographed during a visit to São José da Ponta Grossa Fortress, a historical site located in the north of the island.

This was one of the patterns I created during my final uni project in 2015. I used this print on products of my brand – Koa Estampa & Design – in several colour combinations.

Renda da Ilha was chosen as one of the semifinalist patterns that made it to the top 12 at the award “Premio Estampa Brasil 2015”, executed by the Ministry of Culture of Brazil, in the student’s category “Brazil: a mosaic of cultures”. It was published in the book “Alma Brasileira” – page 129 – which includes all the other semifinalist patterns and the winners of the Award. The competition received approximately 4100 applications from all over Brazil.
