Camboa
Camboa is my final year uni project. It is based on a study of the practical, aesthetic and symbolic functions of industrial products (Löbach, 2001), and it was developed in partnership with Moorea Swimwear.
During the design process, the practical aspect studied the physical function of a bag, while the aesthetic the appearance, and the symbolic, the emotional connection a bag could generate with their user.
An aesthetic-formal analysis was made with competitors to check on shapes and handles and, patterns and surfaces. The project investigated the bag's construction as an accessory and its relation to the beach environment.
For the print ideas, I took pictures of my hometown scenery and asked some friends if I could use some of their pictures for my project. I developed thematic panels with them and drew over 30 repeating patterns with varied motifs that I found in the photos.
Project Statement:
Surfaces are present in everyday life in various ways and have the power to modify an object, giving it a new perception and appearance. This project was inspired by a particular scenario/activity in the Florianopolis region: artesian fishing.
The bag uses its surface to symbolise this traditional activity that belongs to the locals, using a fishing net as a motif to compose the pattern. It was inspired by a picture that a uni classmate, Betina Schmitt, took at Campeche's beach, in Florianópolis.
The name "Camboa" was chosen because of my affective relation with a place with the same name, a suburb located in Governador Celso Ramos, in the greater Florianopolis region. Camboa was where I spent most of the happy moments of my childhood along with my parents and family, at our beach house. My father has always fishing as a hobby, hence I grew up with this archetype relationship with this activity my whole life.
